For a young man three days short of three months on this earth, it is impossible for our grandson Jake to know that today was the most important day of his life. This morning, our pastor and friend Rev. Peter Lange baptized Jake at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Topeka. May I share these words from the baptism service with you.
Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” In the last chapter of Mark our Lord promises, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” And the apostle Peter has written, “Baptism now saves you.”
The Word of God also teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own. We would be lost forever unless delivered from sin, death and everlasting condemnation. But, the Father of all mercy and grace has sent His Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
Our youngest daughter, Kelly, and father Tim’s sister, Missy, are sponsors. They will help Jake grow in this knowledge and grow in his faith. I cannot think of two better sponsors or better families ready to share the joys of salvation with Jake.
You can see Jake and Pastor Lange truly enjoyed each other. I am sorry nature called soon after the baptism, requiring a complete wardrobe change because Jake sure looked stylish. He smiled through the entire baptism as did his loved ones in the pews. This was a joyous day filled with the Holy Spirit. All thanks to our Lord and Savior.
