Late Saturday afternoon, Laura and I enjoyed the KU campus circuit race of the Tour of Lawrence. The tough course, along with the high temperatures and humidity, took a toll on the strong field in the Pro 1/2 race that covered 55 miles and 14 laps on the 3.92 mile circuit.
Still, how I wish I had just a portion of the speed the riders maintained. Heck, just driving the SRAM neutral support car around the KU campus at high-speed with free passage through the traffic booths and no pedestrians in the way would have been a fun trip.
Funny how in the first 15 minutes of a cycling race, we run into more people we know than in all the restaurant and grocery store stops we make in our hometown of Topeka. That sums up our lifestyle. Laura reminded me that “the cycling community is like the characters in the Big Bang Theory only athletic.” Nothing like hanging with super fit nerds.
The Tour of Lawrence concludes its three-day run Sunday with a series of criteriums in downtown Lawrence. Certainly, a great way to spend a holiday weekend. If you are in the area, you will enjoy Sunday’s intense action.
