So Much Work – So Much Sweat

The Trophy and the sweat

The Big 12 Championship trophy sat in the middle of the KU locker room last night. No one hoisted it overhead. No kisses.  No team photo. Nothing other than dirty uniforms piling up next to it.

KU had just defeated Texas A&M on senior night to clinch at least a share of their seventh straight regular season championship. Yet, no one – outwardly – seemed to care. Bill Self promised the celebrating will come for KU on the bus ride home from Columbia Saturday. There is still work to be done – a game against archrival Missouri – in Columbia – where Missouri hasn’t lost all season. Win that one. Share the trophy with no one. Then let the celebration begin.

Somehow the trophy sitting next to a pile of sweat-filled uniforms was the perfect setting. So much work – so much sweat – seven straight – something special.

I find it interesting that very little is made of the fact KU won the conference outright, then wins the post-season tournament. All the glitter and flash of the “big dance” far overshadow the accomplishment of these two feats. The post-season conference tourney (and all the others for that matter) is a joke and nothing but an opportunity for some dark-horse contender to potentially receive a bid to of course, the big dance. otherwise, what is really the point except to fill the coffers of the Big 12.
