There was a small Atomic Fireball reunion before Saturday’s KU game against Kansas State. Robbie Vannaman, Neil Dougherty and I had the opportunity to talk about the story that first appeared on this blog. It has since been published in a KU basketball game program, posted on the KU Athletics web site and will soon be published in The Oread, the KU newsletter.
Dougherty had read and enjoyed the story. He told us it had been mentioned to him by many friends and fans during his return to Lawrence for Wayne Simien’s jersey retirement ceremony. He was amazed to see that there were two variations on “Neil’s Atomic Fireballs” still listed on the student camper sheets.
“Those kids have no idea who I am,” he said laughing.
Vannaman said he had passed out nearly 100 Fireballs before the game and was down to just one or two before tip-off. He had made sure to hold back one for Dougherty. Vannaman said he’d have to start bringing 150 Fireballs to future games and was happy about it.
Good thing Laura and I had picked up ours early. We need to say thank you by bringing a big bucket of Fireballs for the Vannamans. It was nice to be able to say thank you to both men for making the story so popular.
