Thursday night’s annual Kansas Athletics talent show was another big hit. Softball backed up last year’s championship performance with an energy-packed routine that featured rap and stomp and solid dance moves entitled It’s a College Life using music from Annie. Despite the outstanding choreography, softball had to settle for third place.
Second place went to the swimmers and divers for their Ji Glow routine. Using light sticks taped to their all black outfits, their dance performance was mesmerizing thanks to the spectrum of color and movement. The water girls capped their moves by throwing light sticks to the appreciative audience that filled the Kansas Union ballroom.
Volleyball took home the championship honors with a Dancing Puppets show that left the student-athletes roaring their approval. The four players out front were backed up behind a black backdrop by other team members. The coordination it took to flawlessly pull off the dances were a testament to the hours of practice required.
The evening remains one of my favorites at KU. It is a joy to see such skills outside of the sports world and to hear the roars of laughter and the enthusiastic applause for each sport’s efforts.
