Laura and I have discovered the wonders of the parking lots on the west side of Memorial Stadium for our skateboarding. These multi-leveled lots are smooth and traffic free in the evenings. They have become a hot spot for some of the area long boarders. Taking off from the higher lots up by the TKE house, you can cruise along picking up speed rapidly as you make a smooth series of turns from lot to lot. One of the rides finishes with quick esses at speed followed by a wide turn as you race past the football complex. The ride is both relaxing and exhilarating, but most of all, just a whole lot of fun.
My skateboarding goes back to 60s where the clay-composite wheels of the day made a ride of any speed a near death experience. I came home many times the victim of just one small pebble on a West Hills street that sent me or my friends flying. Serious road rash was part of my young life. However, polyurethane wheels and four-foot long decks have brought the days of cruising down hills in wide sweeping turns and mad rushes of speed a true pleasure and absolute joy.
We’re told we need to try the parking garage next to the Student Union at night. From top to bottom and then a quick elevator ride back to the top. Awesome.
